Saudia, the national carrier of Saudi Arabia, commenced operations in 1945 in Jeddah and is one of the world’s largest airlines today. It is a leading airline, not only in terms of operations but also in terms of world class services, winning awards year after year. In 2004, the airline received the prestigious Silver MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Travel Award for the Best Middle East and North Africa Airlines. In 2000, it won several awards recognizing Saudia’s efforts for its in-flight services for passengers with special needs, such as the award by International Flight Catering Association (IFCA) and International In-Flight Food Service Association (IFSA). Saudia airline comprises a fleet of 182 aircraft, including the most modern and advanced wide-bodied jets such as the Boeing 747-468, Boeing 747-300s, Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 777-268, Airbus A320-200, Airbus A330-300, Airbus A300-600, MD-11s, and MD90s. It also flies the Embraer ERJ- 170, as well the Boeing Dreamliner 787.
The primary hubs are in Jeddah, Madinah, Riyadh, Abha and, Dammam in Saudi Arabia, from where Saudia flies to over 81 cities across Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. Member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, Saudia has codeshare agreements with thirteen other airlines as of August 2016. These include Air Europa, Air France, KLM, Korean Airlines, Oman Airlines, and SriLankan Airlines among others.
Ground support and services
Saudi Ground Services (SGS) has been at the forefront of handling ground operations at all the commercial airports in Saudi Arabia since 2011. This service has been established for Saudia Airlines and other local and foreign carriers, as well as for VIP and Royal flights. This professional group handles approximately 150,000 flights in over 26 airports around the world, on an annual basis. The services include company representation, passenger terminal services, baggage handling, ramp services, fleet and water services, cargo loading / offloading, operation services, and traffic control.
Classes of travel
Saudia offers passengers the option of choosing among three classes of travel in most of its flights; First Class, Business Class, and the Guest Class. Privileged travelers, First Class and Business Class guests, are offered various perks, including priority check-in and boarding, deboarding and baggage handling assistance.
The internationally acclaimed Saudia Catering serves the best of its kind meals, based on the region and route of the flight so that passengers can relish their native cuisine. Premium classes are offered Iranian Sevruga caviar, assorted cold cuts, and main courses on demand, such as stuffed chicken and grilled beef fillets to name a few. Apart from this, an extensive array of beverages is also offered on board.
Individual TV screens are available on most flights, with a wide range of selection from audio, movies, up to 40 TV channels, religious recitals, children’s programs and video games and much more. Passengers can also order from the in-flight mall, Skysales, which offers a mix of souvenirs, designer fragrances, and more.
