Casablanca is the largest city, as well as the capital, of Morocco with approximately 3.35 million residents. This city is Morocco's main port and one of the largest, and important, financial centers in the African continent. Originally, Casablanca was known as Anfa in Berber language but after the Portuguese took control of Anfa in the 15th century AD, they rebuilt it and changed the name to Casa Blanca. It derives from the Portuguese word combination meaning "White House" (blanca "white", casa "house"). In the 18th century, an earthquake destroyed most of the town. It was rebuilt by the then Sultan who changed the name into the local Arabic which is A-ddar Al Baidaa. Notable places to visit here are the King Hassan II Mosque, Old Medina, the Corniche, the Shrine of Sidi Abderrahaman, and the Mahkama du Pacha among many more.
